Two injured in South Milwaukee foundry explosion

June 26, 2010 | 6 comments

An explosion at a South Milwaukee foundry left two injured early this morning, South Milwaukee fire officials say.

The two injured employees at the Appleton Electric foundry were transported to a hospital and the status of their injuries is unknown, said Fire Captain James Dorangrichia.

Appleton Electric officials evacuated the plant, located near 5th St. and Milwaukee Ave, prior to the Fire Department's arrival and later, homes on Michigan Ave. were also evacuated, Dorangrichia said.

Twelve other departments were called to the scene, and shortly before 3 a.m. the fire had been contained to a small area in one of the plant's multiple buildings, Dorangrichia said.

"Foundry fires are extremely dangerous," Dorangrichia said. "If you put water in the wrong place, you can cause a significant explosion."

The cause of the fire is unknown, but Dorangrichia said it started during one of the company's routine processes.

  1. Twelve departments? contained at 3:00am. Journal Newswatch posted at 10:00am. Did the night watchman have to write this one up? Sorry Becky, must be tough being the only one on the job at the states largest 'press' outlet.
  2. ChuckDA,

"Foundry fires are extremely dangerous," Dorangrichia said. "If you put water in the wrong place, you can cause a significant explosion."

Obviously, you are not familiar with the area, there are a lot of homes that surround the foundry. I sincerely hope the injuries are minimal.
  3. FoodLuver,

You absolutely missed Chucksa's point. He is not minimizing the fire departments' response. Rather he is pointing out that this was a major incident that required 12 departments at 3:00 in the morning. However, our "premier" news service did not think that this major incident was important enough to report until 7 hours later after everything was over and done with. (I saw the Hales Corners and Oak Creek firetrucks leaving South Milwaukee at about 8:00 - and it still took 2 hours for this to get posted). Hence, Chucksa's comment about Becky (the reporter) being the only one on duty last night.

No wonder the Journal is losing business
  4. Send or call in complaints here, ask why nobody works nights & why weekend staff is just 1 or 2 reporters.

  5. That's right near my house... Didn't hear any shots that I can remember but I was watching a movie.

....I need to get out of that neighborhood
  6. I'm sure that JSonline didn't post because they wanted to get full story out.
