South Milwaukee Fire Chief Jay Behling does not plan to appeal a 90-day, unpaid suspension for using a racial slur on the job five times in front of subordinates.
Robert Mihelich, the attorney representing Behling, said the chief plans to return to his position after the suspension, which began April 15.
Mayor Tom Zepecki suspended Behling for three days without pay in March, a penalty worth $1,000 of the chief's $84,000 annual salary.
In April, the firefighters union filed a complaint with the city's Police and Fire Commission requesting Behling be fired or demoted. The commission opted for a 90-day, unpaid suspension worth more than $21,000 in lost pay.
Commission members cited Behling's 31-year, blemish-free disciplinary record when announcing their decision at an April 15 hearing.
