The basics: Your guide to getting around

It doesn't matter whether you just moved into South Milwaukee or whether you're a lifetime resident, here's your guide to just about everything you need to know about living in the city.

How do I change the address on my driver's license?

You can do this over the phone, through the mail or in person at the nearest state Department of Motor Vehicle location. The nearest DMV office is located at 1835 College Ave. in South Milwaukee. If you'd rather do it via the mail or phone, you can get the details at the DMV's Web site.

How do I change my address with the Postal Service?

You can do this in person at the South Milwaukee Post Office, 2210 10th Ave., or you can do it online at the Postal Service's Web site.

How do I register children for school?

To begin the enrollment process in the South Milwaukee School District, the student's parent/guardian should go to the nearest school. If you have questions about school registration, call call (414) 766-5000 or visit the South Milwaukee School District's Web site for more information.

When is the trash picked up?

Garbage from single family and two-family homes is picked up weekly. Curbside recycling is every other week. Veolia Environmental Services collects recyclable materials from residential properties in the city. They can be reached at (262) 679-0860. What are the city's parking rules?

By city ordinance, during the period from December 1 to March 31, no person shall park a vehicle on any street in the city of South Milwaukee between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. However, vehicles may be parked during such hours if a permit is obtained from the Police Department after the filing of an application and the payment of $20 per month permit fee, $17 if obtained after the 15th of the month, or $65 for a four-month permit. City Hall is located at 2424 15th Ave. It's open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Who are my local elected officials? How can I reach them?

The City of South Milwaukee is governed by a part-time mayor, Thomas Zepecki, and eight part-time alderpersons elected from four districts. Click here for phone numbers and email address for elected officials.

Where is the local library? What are the library hours?

The South Milwaukee Public Library is located at 1907 10th Ave. The library is open Monday through Wednesday, 9:00 am - 8:00 pm; Thursday, 9:00 am - 6:30 pm; Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The library is closed on Sunday. Call (414) 768-8195 for more information.

How do I register to vote? Where do I vote?

You can register at the City Clerk's office at City Hall, 2424 15th Ave., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, you may register at the polling place on the day of the election, provided you have proper identification. South Milwaukee has dozens of fine businesses that offer a large variety of goods and services. The city, which is located just 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee along Lake Michigan, is home to Bucyrus International Inc., Cooper Power Systems, Metalcut Products Inc. and Eder Flag Manufacturing Co.
